After taking a break from colour for new-mum life, she’s ready to bring it back - because you can evolve without growing out of colour. The OG is back!!

We caught up with Sophie to chat all things vivid hair, iconic throw backs and finding out what happens when an OG DIY Dyer enters her next colour era…

Q:How did your love of vivid hair start, and what does it mean to your style and identity...

A:

I have always been confident in my self expression and this started from such a young age with my style and clothing. This then progressed into makeup and eventually my hair when I was brave enough to get it bleached. I knew if I wanted to experiment with vivid hair colours I would need my hair to be a bleach blonde.

I actually started this process by gradually lightening my dark brown hair, and then eventually bleaching it myself at home. Having coloured hair for me, is just another way of self expression and creativity. It’s become a part of my identity and how I want to show up everyday.

Q:SURPRISE! It's your first youtube Crazy Color video, how do you feel seeing it now?

A:

What a throwback!

I LOVED my blunt bob and the gradual pink to icy mint ombre colour - so iconic!

I remember this colour so well. I used Crazy Color Candy Floss & Peppermint and it was such a cute colour combination and I remember everyone loving it! For a DIY job at home I did such a good colour blend!

Q:How has your style, hair and relationship with colour have evolved over the years?

A:

I’ve always loved colour & experimenting with my style. I would say it used to be super playful, then I went through a mermaid/unicorn era and then it slowly got more grunge over time.

I think a big recent prominent change in my style was after I went to Japan, I got so inspired by the fashion/makeup/hair in Tokyo.

Q:Why did you move away from vivid colour, and what’s inspired you to come back to it?

A:

If I’m honest, it was purely for hair that was low maintenance. I had a baby January 2025 and I was breastfeeding every few hours, so stepping away from my little one for more than an hour or so was difficult. My salon trips were always a good 4-6 hours long when I had my roots bleached/toned with a cut, so I knew this just wasn’t going to be possible.

I also was finding I was having to be quick when washing/doing my hair. Going all black meant that I could have a low maintenance haircare routine and touch it up myself at home.

I definitely lost myself through postpartum and my self expression was lacking. My previous daily get ready routine was an hour or so, & this just wasn’t possible anymore with a little one.

Since coming back to work at the start of the year and creating creative content again, along with treating myself to days out at festivals, concerts and seeing friends, I knew it was time to bring the colour back. I’ve now stopped breastfeeding and have more pockets of time for me. So I want to be able to gift myself my colourful hair back and one way I love to express myself.

Q:What does being an OG DIY Dyer mean to you now?

A:

Because I went black and used a box dye, it’s going to be a journey back to the bleach side. And a process of really getting those vivid colours to pop.

I know I need a level 9/10 base for that. So right now it’s about getting my hair bleached but keeping the integrity of my hair, along with the length, because it’s grown so long now!

I haven’t had long hair for years, so I really would love to keep its length for this new coloured hair era! Also with this length of hair, it means I can get more creative with colour as I have more hair to play with.

For now with my current hair’s condition, I have been able to get the front section and the underneath bleached and whilst I’m in the process of getting my hair lightened to level 9/10 which will take a few sessions over the course of a few months, I will be working with the results and vivid colouring it myself at home again, like OG DIY Sophie!

Q: Do you remember the first time you dyed your hair a vivid colour?

A:

YES! It was a lilac purple colour back when I was at university, I think in 2011.

Q:How did you first discover Crazy Color?

A:

I think from Instagram? It was so long ago! Or it might have been from going hair dye shopping to a hair beauty store. It was always the most affordable dye and I loved the range of colours - that’s what drew me in.

Q:What made you film your first Crazy Color YouTube video?

A:

I always tried to film my hair dye transformations and I knew the ombre pink to mint would be such a cool one to film and show how to ombre your hair at home.

Q:How does it feel watching that video back now?

A:

It’s so fun looking back at how many years ago it was and the fact I’ve been dyeing my hair for 15 years now!

Q:What did colourful hair represent to you at that point in your life?

A:

Honestly I will never forget my UV Toxic Green hair! SO ICONIC! I really want to try and do that again when my hair is light enough. Imagine that paired with black hair?

Q:Did having vivid hair influence the way you dressed or experimented with fashion and beauty?

A:

Definitely, I’m such a matchy matchy gal - so whenever I had a specific hair colour, my makeup and wardrobe would match.

Q:Do you think your relationship with your hair colour has changed as you've got older?

A:

No not really, I still see it as a way of self expression.
